What social media channels do you use and why?
Instagram, LinkedIn, Tiktok, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or perhaps WhatsApp Business? Which social media channels do you deploy? In today's digital world, social media can't be ignored in our daily lives, but also in the way we communicate and share information on business. How do you figure out which social media platform to choose for your business with so many different options? As of 2023, there are so many platforms, but also so many different options, trends and updates to consider. Can't see the wood for the trees anymore among all the different social media platforms? I help you regain an overview in this blog.
It makes sense to think: I'm going to be active on every social media platform, because then I'll be as visible as possible. But do you really want everyone to find you? You probably thought about your target audience when you started your organization or business. Students, young professionals, parents, people over 65, Millennials, women, people with certain interests: you can create a complete profile of your (potential) customer. However, they are not on every platform. In this blog I will help you determine which platforms you can use for your business, what exactly you can do with these platforms and which target group you can reach with them. So you can focus on what you want to do and not unnecessarily waste time and energy.
Instagram is a visual social media platform where the focus is on sharing photos and videos. It is hugely popular with a wide age range between 15 and 40, but especially with young people and Millennials (people born between 1980 and 1995). A wide variety of topics such as travel, lifestyle, fashion, beauty, interior design, sports, health and cooking are common on Instagram. The platform offers opportunities for creating brand awareness, building and expanding a brand identity, giving your brand a (personal) voice, sharing and promoting your products and services in a visual way, building a community with (potential) customers and reaching potential customers through targeted ads.
Instagram ads have a lot of targeting options, which allows organizations to reach specific audiences and thus generate more leads to your website, services and products. The platform is also increasingly being used to provide 1-to-1 customer service through the chat feature. In addition, you can use Instagram Stories (a message that is visible for 24 hours), Instagram Reels (short videos) and Instagram Shopping where you can link your products to your Instagram content so that followers can get to your product and shop within a click. In other words: If you want to target a relatively younger audience that is visually inclined, Instagram is the platform for you.
Tiktok
TikTok is a platform that has experienced tremendous growth in recent years and is especially popular among Gen Z (people born between 1996 and 2015) and young Millennials. It is a platform for creating and sharing (short) catchy videos, usually with music and creative effects and is known for user creativity and viral trends. Where just a few years ago the platform was known as a platform full of dance videos, it is now used for almost anything: news updates, tutorials, TikTok hacks (ways to do something easier or more fun), recipes, personal experiences: everything! In addition, TikTok is now increasingly used by Gen Z as a search engine (goodbye Google?).
It offers opportunities for viral content, influencer marketing and reaching a young and energetic audience. Brands can participate in challenges/trends or share creative marketing campaigns on TikTok, allowing you to build a connection with your target audience and show that you too are moving with the times. So, are you looking for a creative and dynamic platform to present your brand in a fun and innovative way, want to attract attention and increase your brand awareness among a young audience? Don't wait any longer and start your TikTok career.
I hear you thinking: Facebook? Is that still of this time with the rise of Tiktok and Instagram? But yes, Facebook is one of the oldest and most established social media platforms, is still the largest social media platform in the world AND still has a very broad user base. Facebook focuses on connecting users and sharing different types of content, including text messages, photos, videos, links, events, groups and Facebook Stories. It caters to different audiences, from young people to older adults to those over 65.
If your target audience is in different age groups and you also want to aim at a relatively older audience, Facebook can be a good choice. It offers opportunities for creating brand awareness, organizing events, creating engagement with Facebook groups and reaching a wide audience through advertising. Facebook ads have many targeting options and this allows you as an organization to reach specific audiences. In other words: Facebook is still crucial for organizations of any size and with any target audience.
LinkedIn is a professional networking platform focused on business connections, recruitment, career development and career-related content. Especially for entrepreneurs, LinkedIn is booming and updates that were shared on Facebook a few years ago are now posted on LinkedIn. If your target audience is professionals, entrepreneurs, recruiters, job seekers, companies or people interested in business content, LinkedIn is the perfect choice for you.
It provides opportunities for sharing professional content (your new product or service, updates about your business, professional articles), networking with colleagues, attracting talent, finding new business opportunities and building a professional network and business relationships. In other words, for professional growth, LinkedIn is the platform to be on.
Snapchat
Snapchat is a social media platform that focuses primarily on sharing brief snapshots via photos and videos that disappear again within a few seconds (except Stories which stay for 24 hours). The platform is especially popular with teens and young adults. Unlike Instagram and Tiktok, it is not about connecting the placer with as many followers as possible, but mainly about personal communication, sharing spontaneous moments and creating a sense of exclusivity. It can also be used for following celebrity and brand content, but it is mainly used personally.
If your target audience is teenagers and young adults, Snapchat can be an effective way to generate engagement and interaction. With features like geofilters (a location-related filter you can place over your photo or video to show where you are) and augmented reality lenses, your organization can create or have users create authentic and interactive content to create brand engagement and build brand loyalty and brand love.
WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp Business is a separate version of Whatsapp designed for businesses and a platform for companies that want direct, 1-to-1 communication with their customers. It is particularly suitable for reaching audiences that appreciate a personal and direct approach, such as Millennials and young people who do not like calling and want to send a quick message while they can do something else in the meantime. WhatsApp Business enables organizations to provide quick customer service, make reservations and answer questions about their products and services. It is also a convenient platform for sending personalized messages and promoting offers or events.
WhatsApp Business is especially popular with small and medium-sized businesses that want to build direct and personal communication with their customers, but is also increasingly used as a customer service tool by larger organizations (think health insurance, airlines and international fashion companies). WhatsApp Business is crucial for you if customer interaction, fast response time and direct communication with customers is important to your organization.
You may be thinking: Twitter focuses on sharing quick and short messages about thoughts, opinions and news, right? Yes, the platform is widely used by journalists, celebrities, politicians and stakeholders to discuss current events, but the platform can certainly be used for business as well. Unlike Instagram and Facebook, it is less of a direct marketing tool, but a very good communication channel to communicate directly and in real time with your customers.
Twitter is a good platform for to use as customer service to answer questions and comments from (potential) customers, respond to customer feedback or keep customers up-to-date on a real-time event. You can also show as an organization that you are involved in a particular trend or current event by participating in trending hashtags. Twitter is mainly about dialogue with followers and the platform can be used well for online reputation management, strengthening a relationship with your target audience and reinforcing your brand identity and brand voice. Conclusion: if you as an organization want to participate in current discussions, give your organization a voice and provide public customer service, Twitter is a very valuable platform.
Like Instagram, Pinterest is a visual platform, but Pinterest is all about inspiration and creativity. The platform focuses on discovering, storing, categorizing and sharing inspiring content (images, ideas, quotes, products). Pinterest is very popular with Millennials, and particularly women, who are looking for creative inspiration in topics such as fashion, interior design, recipes and DIY projects.
For businesses, Pinterest offers the opportunity to share visually appealing content, drive traffic to their website and promote products. Pinterest also allows organizations to advertise and promote pins in a targeted way where Pinterest knows well what users are looking for based on the saved pins. Conclusion? If you want to build a brand that focuses on aesthetics and inspiration, Pinterest is perfect to showcase your creativity and reach your target audience with engaging content.
So what social media channels are you going to use?
Each social media platform has its own target audience, focus and business opportunities. When choosing the right social media platform or platforms for your organization, it is important to consider what your goals are and who your target audience is. Whereas WhatsApp Business is ideal for direct interaction with customers and Twitter is perfect for online reputation management and customer service, Instagram and TikTok focus more on visual content and younger audiences. Facebook is a good option if you have a broad target audience and LinkedIn can help you perfectly in the professional field. By choosing the right mix of social media platforms and continuing to evaluate and experiment, you can effectively reach your target audience, build engagement and brand awareness, and achieve your business results.
